1991 Opel Astra F.

For the first time, Astra F appeared in 1991 at the Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main. At that time, it was the largest project Opel, in which 8,000 engineers and designers worked. In addition to the main name, Astra was sold like Chevrolet Astra (Brazil), Holden Astra (Australia), Opel Optima, Opel Kadett (South Africa) and Vauxhall Astra (United Kingdom).

Initially, the car was available as a 3-door and 5-door hatchback, but soon a 5-door spacious wagon joined him, and later – a 4-door sedan and a 2-door cabriolet.

The body of the machine is smoother, with soft lines. Front were narrow lights with orange rotation indicators (later – white). In the back there is a high rear door.

The body looked very modern and clearly differed from the outdated Kadett. Although Astra did not grow much compared with its predecessor, it was much more space inside her. For those days there was enough space for legs and heads, and only very high people sitting from behind could have reason to complain when the front seat was in the extreme rear position. Of course, the 5-door sedan was much easier to sit down than in the 3-door hatchback.

The seats were big and comfortable. The dashboard was modern, and materials relative to good quality. What is important, they were also gathered quite well.

The trunk was a medium size of the hatchbacks, and the sedan and especially the station wagon, he was very large for his class.

The suspension was set softly, which has grown comfort, but was tough enough so that the car could move quickly. Initially, Opel Astra F was a poorly equipped machine, but over the years and the fight against competitors, Opel has increased the number of regular elements in this machine. For example, in Astra Classic, manufactured since 1998, there were two front airbags as standard.

Of course, in Western Europe, ABS was also installed at the factory, and the additional equipment included air conditioning, immobilizer, electrical windows, electric mirrors and heated, heated the front seats and the on-board computer.

At Astra F. Many different gasoline and diesel engines were installed. Since the beginning of production, gasoline engines were available to modernization, such as: 1.4i – 60 hp (until 1996), 1.4SI – 82 hp (until 1996), 1.6i – 71 hp (from 1993 to 1998), 1.6. I – 75 hp, 1.6SI – 101 hp (since 1993 to modernization), 1.8i – 90 hp, 1.8 GSI 16V – 125 hp (GSI version), 2.0 GSI – 115 hp and 2.0 GSI – 150 hp (until 1996).

In addition, Diesels were installed under the hood of Opel: 1.7 D – 57 hp (until 1992), 1.7 D – 60 hp (from 1992 to modernization), 1.7 TDS – 82 hp (from 1993 to 1998).

In 1994, Opel conducted a comprehensive reconstruction of Astra F. He included the body, interior and a number of power units. Rotation indicators, door handles, steering wheel, upholstery drawing, type of materials in the cabin have been changed, improved corrosion protection and soundproofing salon. The following engines appeared, which were largely replaced mentioned earlier: gasoline: 1.4i – 60 hp, complies with the EURO 2 standard (since 1996), 1.4 16V – 90 hp, complies with EURO 2 standard (since 1996 G.), 1.6i – 75 hp Euro 2 (since 1996), 1.6i 16V – 101 hp, corresponding to the EURO 2 standard (since 1994), 1.8i 16V – 116 hp, corresponds to Euro 2 (since 1994) and 2.0i 16V – 136 hp (since 1995); Diesels: 1.7 TD – 68 hp

The largest problem of Astra F, as many Opel models, there was insufficient corrosion protection. Cars quickly rust, when they did not take care of them properly. The first traces of rust appeared on wings and thresholds. Then corrosion struck the exhaust system and often fastening the pendant components.

During the years of production, Opel has slightly improved protection against rust, but it still remained the weakest place of Astra F. The second most important problem was suspension, which quickly worn out. The dignity of the car can take durable engines, comfort on the road, a large salon and a luggage compartment, as well as the value of the price and quality of the car.

The success of Astra F is evidenced by the sale of a huge amount of cars. In 1998, Opel completed the production of this car in Germany, replacing it new, and the assembly lines were transferred to Poland, where the car as Astra Classic was made four years.
